Run an experiment. Look at five of the top websites within a given product or service niche. We'll assume each has its own blog.

Read one or two random articles across all five sites, with the goal of gauging overall quality. Chances are, the most successful companies have blogs with much better content than those with weak content. And mind you, that action isn’t always making a purchase. Sometimes it’s simply “click here for more information” (and signing up for a mailing list), or “check out our current discounted items” (moving them to the next level of the sales funnel), or “see if you qualify for free shipping” (to give them one more incentive before closing the deal).
